What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is the gentle application of pressure to areas mainly on the feet, that aims to restore and re-balance all the body systems. Using various massage techniques, reflex points on the feet, which represent the body, are stimulated to promote relaxation, improve circulation, reduce pain and encourage overall healing.
What is the theory behind Reflexology?
The theory behind reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body. Proponents believe that pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person’s health and overall wellbeing.
Who can benefit from Reflexology?
Reflexology may help to reduce the severity of symptoms in conditions such as:
- Digestive disorders (such as IBS)
- Tension headaches
- Menstrual/reproductive disorders, such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Respiratory disorders (such as asthma)
- Pain management, including back pain
What is a typical Reflexology treatment like?
A typical Reflexology treatment is 60 minutes long and begins with a thorough case history of your health and lifestyle. You are then asked to remove your shoes and socks and sit or lie comfortably on a treatment table. An initial assessment of the feet is made. This is followed by the application of warm towels to gently heat the feet. The Reflexologist will then stimulate various points of tenderness or tension using various massage techniques. All areas of the feet are treated to ensure all reflexes are worked thoroughly, with extra work being dedicated to areas that require more attention. By the end of the treatment, you should feel very relaxed!
